Greens and around the garden

Another mid-week harvest: swiss chard, asparagus, spinach, broccoli, arugula, a bit of parsley, two small green garlics and one overwintered onion that was left over from the bed by the shed.
Also new to the garden are two trellises that I got for my melons. I hope that the melons will actually climb and use vertical spacing instead of spreading long, but since it's a first time for me to plant melons I guess I'll find out the hard way. Of course it would have been easier and cheaper to ask my hubby to build me trellis but he's been doing so much for the garden already that I didn't want to add more work to his list.
And we just might have a kohlrabi this time around! it's actually starting to form so I'm looking forward to trying it once it's big enough.  I wonder how well they keep outside of the fridge.
Guess what decided to grow - Celery! This is self blanching variety that I planted but it really did not do well in seedling cups so I plucked it into the soil about a month ago. It's been sitting pretty much unchanged until about a week ago when it finally started growing. Maybe all this rain was a good thing. Next to it on the left are some beets waking up.
More beets and some swiss chard. The straw around it was used when last hard frost hit us on April 30th and I covered them up with layer of straw trying to protect it. Looks like it worked. There should have been some golden beets too but I can't figure out where is yellow chard and where gold beets so will just have to wait.
Here is my tiny fig bush that i planted this spring. It will take a few years for it to start fruiting so need to be patient. Behind the fence are my randomly scattered potatoes. I had some small potatoes that were grown last year but not use over winter - they sprouted and while I planted some in the main garden, I just had too many of them so I scattered them around the garden when we were building and my hubby then covered them with soil  as he was moving it from the pavement. So looks like they're awake and growing and I just might few extra potatoes to pick come August. Even if they don't produce much they'll at least fill the back side with greenery.
And last but not the least, does anyone know what the heck is this plant? I thought it was a lettuce because it came in a lettuce mix, but it just does not taste like any crisp lettuce I know off. It's a bit bitter too. Not sure what it is so any suggestions or if anyone has grown it in the past I'm all ears.
On the left side of it is curly sail green lettuce which is I love to munch on. Need to plant more of it. So slowly growing. More planting needs to be done over the weekend.

  1. Everything looks great! Good luck with your fig. When I lived in central NJ, I has a huge fig tree in a protected location. I got tons of figs from this tree. They will be worth the wait.

    1. I really hope that I will have many figs couple of years from now. I planted 3 bushes this spring and can't wait to try them. It would be fantastic to make roasted figs or a preserve.

  2. Jenny I had some of that in my salad mix I planted also. I did not like it at all. Not sure what it is though. One thing about growing salad mix is it was hard for me to tell what was "salad mix" and what was a weed that maybe I shouldnt eat! lol

    1. It's definitely not a weed because I've seen it in the farmermarket but it was labeled just as lettuce. And yes, I really don't like the taste either and will pull it out.

  3. That looks exactly like the "arugula" I planted and ripped out because it tasted "skunky".
