Last harvest of the year

I can honestly say "brrr, it's cold outside" this morning. We got "balmy" 23 degrees at 6 am. Obviously with the freeze on the way this weekend, we had to harvest as much as we could so I took Friday off and just picked and picked and picked. Many green peppers and some baby eggplants. Remaining squash and few green tomatoes - thankfully not many as we got hit with late blight and most plants succumbed within a week and even green fruit showed brown splotches.
And of course I've been using peppers in most of my cooking on daily basis. Thankfully my hubby loves cooked peppers so he's not complaining.. or at least not too much..
Most of the green peppers were crated and delivered to the CSA folks so they'll enjoy it. I did keep few large bell peppers so I can chop them up for winter. And I did make a batch of hot and sweet pepper jelly - not too much though as we don't use it all that often. I'll keep couple of jars but the rest will be shipped to CA to a friend.
And since it's been so chilly, I thought it was a good time to start baking and since I had plenty of picked apples I thought having an apple pie is a good thing. Hubby didn't complain :)
So how are you doing with your harvest this week? Come and see it at Dave's page how others are doing.

  1. Jeez, Jenny, have you thought about buying a pickup truck? The pie and jelly look scrumptious. But what's this about "last harvest?"

    1. heh, pick up truck was one of the choices considered two years ago when I got my new car (my old one was 14 yrs old). Maybe next time. I think it's last harvest because I didn't plant anything for "fall garden" and only have a row of romanesca cauliflower growing so if they do produce I'll post pictures, but otherwise that's it for this year. Oh and few potatoes that I never bothered to check if they grew. I guess I can dig them up at some point.

  2. Woah, those are a LOT of peppers! I can only dream of harvesting that many - I simply love roasted peppers!

    1. I love roasted peppers when they're fully ripe, but don't care much for green peppers. When they're not fully ripe they have a bit of bitterness that I don't like.

  3. That apple pies looks good. I haven't had a homemade one in years. We usually make a crisp with apples instead of pie. It got down to 26 degrees here so much of our garden is done for too.

    1. Hmm.. haven't made crisp in years so maybe we should swap with you trying pie and I'll make a crisp :)

  4. Wow on the peppers! And very nice looking pie. I'm more of a crisp person as well, mostly just because I'm too lazy to make crust and the crumble top is so easy to put together.

    1. Have you tried making crust in the food processor? it cuts down butter into flower in no-time.
