Planting Garlic and Harvest weekend

It's been very slow two weeks. We get few greens and remaining tomatoes and peppers for meals. And picked up our "surprise" watermelon. It wasn't hot enough for it to fully ripen but it was still tasty. Also picked up some turnips, one of the fall carrots that is very twisted; and found a nice Maitake in the local park under an old oak tree.
And this weekend I planted some of my garlics - German Porcelain Garlic (left) that I had this  year and plenty left for winter, Inchelium Red Garlic (right), and Kettle River Giant (middle) that I ordered new to try.
The new varieties are soft-neck and supposed to have nice flavor with long shelf-life. Will see how they'll perform in my garden and if the flavor is as good as described.  I will plant second wave of more German Porcelain next weekend in large garden bed to have more for green garlic for cooking in spring - I really like their scapes.

  2. I gave up on garlic after bombing out 3 years in a row, but I do enjoy cooking with the greens. Maybe I'll grow it again next year jsut for that. LOL. Beautiful, bountiful harvest. Check out that fungi!

    1. Try planting some early season hardnecks called Asiatic or Turban garlics, and if you want hardneck (with scapes in spring) try Creole varieties. Hope you'll have better luck with these!

  3. Wow! Still a great harvest for this time of year! We lost all our summer crops to frost this last week so it will be Spinach, Kale and Chard for us the rest of the year! That's a beautiful mushroom!

    1. Considering that this was over 2 week period harvest it's not that much, but we're enjoying every little bit of it. And thank you, i love Maitake in the fall!

  4. Great harvest. I am waiting another week or so to plant my garlic, but hoping to clear a space for them some time this week. Can't believe the season is almost over.

    1. Normally i'd wait till end of October to plant, but everything points to early and harsh winter and I want to make sure garlic will have enough roots to survive it.
