Early June in the Garden

Early June in the garden - transplants are growing nicely, with some of my tomatoes, peppers and eggplants setting buds so I hope we'll have something to harvest this summer.  I'm going to try few new varieties this year, including couple of hybrids - this is 4th of July one in picture and it's showing good promise of fruit cluster. I got this plant at the tomato fest on Memorial Weekend, together with some others like Great White, Peach, Sungold and few others. I also picked up few eggplants at the same place, which is what you see below.  Weeds still grow faster than I can keep up with them.
My border flowers like peonies are starting to open up but not all are in full power. I think next year will be much better when all 7 peonies will bloom in the main garden. The two in the small are also just about to open, and my largest one by the drive way entry is gorgeous! Will try to take a picture once it's fully open.  And I finally got to pick few strawberries and weight them! They mostly have been eaten on the spot in the garden before :) These are TriStar variety and one in upper/middle section (larger than others) is Honeyoye.  The ones I really look forward are my Cabot as it's my main crop.
On the other side of the arbor this peony is full in bloom - it has bright yellow center that's not really visible in this picture. And the smell is heavenly!  On the left side of the peony is my lily struggling along - bugs have been really doing damage to it, but it looks like it will still bloom.

  1. Peonies are such a pretty flower. They are just starting to open up around here. I don't have any in my yard, but I walk by yards that do.

    1. They are just starting out here as well. My pink and dark red are still closed off.

  2. Those 1st tomato flowers (and then fruits) are so anticipated, as are the strawberries. We are still a couple of weeks from actually eating strawberries, I think...the wait is so hard! And your peonies are lovely. They are one of my favourites - it's too bad that the blooms are so fleeting, but I also quite enjoy the lush foliage that lasts all summer long.

    1. Our main crop strawberries won't be ready for a while, but we can enjoy these for now. And yes, I'm looking forward to "first" everything :) And I do enjoy peonies while they last and foliage later among other plants as it gives different depth to the garden. I planted many of them on border of the garden, but it will take time to really get them well established. The good part is that there are plants planted to bloom at all time through the summer.

  3. I have a sungold tomato plant too. They are so sweet and good! Even a few strawberries are nice to have before they really start producing. We have had just a few the past couple of days too. I don't have any peonies but wish I did. They are so pretty. Nancy

    1. I'm redoing my patio in the back yard so will get few more roses and thinking of tree peony to add to mix. Still deciding :) enjoy your first set of strawberries too!
