Harvest June 30

It's been pretty sad week for the garden with so many things ruined. But there are few remaining items that groundhog and bunnies seem to be ignoring so I've been harvesting them - garlic, few potatoes for a meal and remaining strawberries.
Early variety of garlic has been pretty disappointing in size, with only few heads that are decent. Will see how the rest will come out. I still hope my main crop will be better. Potatoes are very small as well, probably due to lack of water as it's been very dry here. Purple potatoes are definitely way too small and not many formed so can't really justify planting them in quantity. They'll be planted only a few in a row next year.

Strawberries are pretty much finished, definitely not as much as we had last  year so I think it's time to rip them all out and replace with fresh plants. Thankfully Cabot sent out enough side shoots to give me new replacements.

  1. Well what you do have looks very nice. And hopefully those purple potatoes will taste good enough to make up for their lackluster performance.

    1. Purple are pretty good but I think I like butterball better.

  2. Jenny - Just back from a trip to England and read f the damage done by the ground hog to your garden. What frustration and anger you must feel. The deer knew I was away these last two weeks and have been dining on my lilies and hosta and other perennials. No veg garden disasters thankfully.

    1. Frustration and anger is an understatement - many of my veggies were getting close to be ready for harvest and instead all got destroyed. Sorry to hear about your hosta and lilies :(

  3. I'm growing purple potatoes here for the first time this year. I am hoping they will size up for me. I hate it when you devote space, time and energy to something and it doesn't pan out!

    1. I hope they do better in your garden this year. Last year they did really good, and this year it's a miss.

  4. I am sorry to hear about your garden problems. It is hard to watch all the hard work be for nothing, or almost nothing.

    1. Between the late spring, flux rain and all wild life this year turns out to be a total wash in the garden :(

  5. Well, I think your harvests look lovely. And your garlic looks pretty good too - you should have seen mine last year. It was probably half the size of your bulbs. This year I added some more manure, etc., and I spaced them out a bit more in the hopes of getting them to beef up.

    1. I definitely feel the need for a LOT of manure to be added to the garden as well. Last year I did few buckets and it was much better, so lesson learned. Hope your garlic will beef up fast!
