July 31 mid-week harvest

First at the community I've picked few beans, couple of hot peppers, cucumbers, zucchini, few onions, one large tomato and a handful of yellow pear cherry tomatoes; and nice size cabbage - two other much larger ones walked away to be someone else's dinners (which is fine, as I told people they can take what they want).  One zucchini broke when i tossed it toward the bag so I'll eat it, but the rest of the veggies went to the community kitchen.
At the home front, I got few baby beets and carrots - neither one is really sizing up well; few cherry tomatoes  and regular tomatoes, and potatoes. I started peeling few to cook up before I realized that they weren't weighted in, so you have one "prepped" and the other "left over" picture.

I didn't put fresh manure on the beds this year and I'm paying the price - everything is very small and not growing as well as it should be, so lesson learned and in fall I'm getting a truckload of manure for all beds.

Not in pictures are two bags of beans that I picked at CSA farm last night - I'm not keeping any of it, as it's going to the NYC on Saturday with CSA owner. It's my best playground where I can feel the silky black dirt in my fingers for few hours each week and I get to pick great stuff :)

  1. Lovely veggies. That cabbage is huge! My carrots are taking (what seems like) forever to size up as well. I have to get my fall planting in the ground so I'll probably end up pulling them this week, even though I don't think they are full sized yet.

    1. I planted my fall carrots and hope they'll do better this time than the spring planting as well. Hope yours will size up well soon.

    1. "a little bit" is right - this year harvest is pathetic. :( it's enough to eat each day but nothing saved for winter whatsoever.

  3. I do that so many times. I start cooking and realize that I didn't weigh it. Your cabbage is so much bigger than mine were. I grew small ones. And I have trouble finishing them off. A community kitchen (or a large family) is really needed to eat a lot of cabbage.

    1. I planted small variety of cabage at home, but groundhog ate them all. The large ones were only at the community as they asked for these in advance - they use it for slaw, and were happy to receive it this morning.

  4. Seems to me like you are still getting a lot of things even without the manure. You must spend hours every week in gardens. Do you preserve a lot? Nancy

    1. We mostly eat fresh, I have some beans frozen but nothing else yet. Normally I spend about 1 hour a day after work to harvest and weed as I pick. On the weekend I spend couple of hours in the community garden and about 6 hrs at the CSA farm a week.
