Harvest July 7

This week has seen the last of strawberries, first of black raspberries, first beans and young onions. Beans are recovering from the animal attack as thankfully groundhog ate leaf and not all flowers but the results are very tiny comparing to what I hoped to get each week when I planted 100+ plants. Onions are also not sizing up right either but I'm happy to have them anyway. My current indulgence is my black raspberries that I have every morning for breakfast.
EDIT: Here's a quick video of me picking black raspberries in the back yard from small patio.

On a happier note, the community garden is doing really well and I picked first head of broccoli, many beans and first zucchini!

  1. Nice to see you are recovering a little from the groundhog attack. Nice to have a backup garden. Those are nice beans and zucchini. I'm still waiting for mine.

    1. Hope you'll get your zucchini and beans soon, they are very good when they're first of the season. I've planted my replacements beans this weekend but not sure if there won't be any more damage from groundhog. For now I'm picking what made it through carnage.

  2. Black raspberries, wow - I knew of the yellow variety, but not black - awesome. Is the flavour more intense?

    1. Actually they don't really taste much like raspberries at all - they don't have this intensity or raspberry smell but very nice sweet/tart berry flavor. I like them very much.

  3. I see wild black raspberries every day along my walk. Sadly they don't taste as good as the garden varieties though. Way too sour and really small. They might make a good pie though. And I'm glad you are at least getting something from your beans.

    1. These are a bit on smaller size but they are sweet to taste. I love them in jam. And thanks, I'm glad at least something coming back from bean disaster.

  4. I love black raspberries too. We had them for a few years, but now we only have red and yellow ones. We don't get a lot but I enjoy what we do get!

    1. I haven't tried yellow ones (they were planted but deer seem to be keen on eating them first) so will have to find them in market.

  5. Those onions look good to me - I'm always checking to see how mine are doing as this is my first time growing them and I have no idea what to expect. The rest of your harvest looks wonderful too, of course - and I'm so glad the community garden seems to be making up for the damage to your home garden.

    1. They are a lot smaller than i hoped for, but I'm happy to have them since they didn't get planted on time and were sitting at home for nearly 1.5 month. i was worried that none of them would grow.

  6. How do you like the lack raspberries? I love raspberries but I haven't been successful growing them.

    1. I love them, they're very refreshing and don't overwhelm like regular raspberries. this year most of the harvest is from runners that grew from old canes so maybe i won't trim them and will see how they do next year.

  7. Nice harvest! I especially loved the video. I used to pick wild black raspberries when we lived in Vermont. Made the best wine from it.

  8. Nice harvest, I like your container garden, it must be a lot of work to water them, wish I can grow some small fruits in pots.

    1. It is a lot of work, but if i want my lemons and few others that must be sheltered in winter and protected from deer, then yes I have to keep it watered all summer long. It helps if we have more rain :)

  10. Thank goodness the groundhog left you some of your garden. I love the black raspberries. They look so plump and juicy when ripe. ~ Grow a Good Life

    1. Not much left, but I'll take what I can. And yes, these black raspberries are very juicy.
