Harvest July 14

This weekend I cleared out most of my beds, pulling out all veg that was damaged by groundhog and salvaging what was left over. So the last of the arugula came out, beans are only few left to produce - there are about a dozen pole beans that survived and about 10 bush plants. Few beet roots, remaining onions as they got trampled and stopped growing,  some volunteer potatoes and a handful of cherry tomatoes.
Tomorrow I'm getting few buckets of manure delivered, so I'll be redoing my beds and will replant beans, carrots, greens and winter veggies. Maybe few summer squash if they still grow in such late summer.

  1. Not a bad harvest, real considerate of that groundhog to share with you. Replant is what I would do. You have plenty of gardening season left where you live, not so much up here. Gardening is all about optimism, I'm sure the new garden will be terrific.

    1. I'm trying to stay optimistic, but it's very hard considering that I lost 3 month of work. I hope it works out and something can be grown again.

  2. It is so hard to deal with predator damage like that. But I'm with David - you can replant and grow so many things before the end of the season.

    1. My problem is planting something that groundhog and bunnies won't destroy all over again. So it's mustard greens, arugula, garlic in the fall and will try second wave of potatoes.

  3. Considering the damage that was done, I'm very impressed by your harvests - they are just beautiful & I'm sure were delicious to boot!

  4. Why are critters like groundhogs so cute, but yet so destructive? I'm in zone 7 and I'm planting more beans (eaten by Japanese beetles), tomatoes (had such a bad year last year, I wanted to have back-up seedlings this year) and eggplants (eaten by flea beetles) in the next week and I'm sure there's time for summer squash too.

    1. Sorry to hear about the bug issue, but at least you get a month extra growing time so hope it will work out well for you.

    2. I'm in the same zone as Julie and I too replanted more beans as the pole beans aren't doing their thing. You have plenty of time to grow more items. Groundhog control? Don't know. We got some spray to keep the rabbits out. It keeps me out for a few days too.

  5. Hopefully your fall garden will be left alone. But still you got quite a bit considering.

    1. Considering all the space I have this is honestly tiny. I was counting on 5-8 lbs of beans alone each harvest. :(

  6. Nice harvest. I can't believe you still have arugula. Mine bolted ages ago. I had a ground hog years ago that drove me nuts. They can be such a nightmare for the gardener.

    1. Oh I keep re-seeding it through the summer as I love having it in my salads.
