Next Chapter in life - Master Gardener program

Well I've finally arrived to the point where I'm ready to change my life - I'm taking plunge and going for Master Gardener certification program that will start this fall/winter. For past 20 yrs I've worked in corporate world of Telco and industry and past 10 yrs as project manager, and I think I'm ready to take a step back and focus more on my personal well being and do something I really enjoy - gardening, farming etc. Obviously I will keep working full time as I do transition and education in next year or two, but the plan is to start doing more weekends/part time in evenings in nurseries or at the farms. This is what makes me happy, even if it's more physically tiring but mentally so much more rewarding.

Is it the right choice? Well, time will tell. At any rate having more knowledge never hurt anyone.

  1. Good for you Jenny. It's important to pursue what you love to do. Sounds like you won't regret your decision. How are those bear cubs? Were they eating leaves in that tree?

    1. The cubs were eating berries - that is bird cherry tree and it's very fragrant when ripe. And I hope it's a good decision too for future.

    1. Volunteering hours is not a problem as I already do community garden so having few lectures there during the year and maintaining plot covers most of them. We have spring/fall garden fests so i guess part would be involved there too.

  3. That's fantastic, Jenny! It takes courage to make such a change, but I'm certain it will be worthwhile. You really can't go too wrong if you love what you do.

    1. I find myself being much happier on weekends and days off when I just focus on plants. I like explaining to people at the community how to do things so I think I'll be happier there.

  4. What a great choice. I am with you! I'm hoping to start the MG certification soon--as soon as I can slow down. Keep me (us) posted on your progress.

  5. My sister just retired from same thing, project manager at a Telco, and is very happy the stress is over. Good you could get into a MG program. Around here only one is in Boston and is very hard to get into.

    1. I'm not quite ready to "retire", but wish I could because of that very same stress. Our MG program is from Rutgers university and the satellite office is only 20 min away from my home. Since this entire area is based on agriculture it only makes sense that they'd open one in the area.
