Marinara and Wednesday pickings

First batch of marina made, used and even some was canned for winter!  I have to admit that San Marzano's make it very "tomato" taste like and I need to find a good balance with heirlooms.  So far we've been gorging on the black and purple varieties and giving them to others to try but now that everyone had at least some taste I'm keeping them for sauces.
In the meanwhile, picking continues and does not wait for Mondays so here is Wednesday harvest.
These two are separate on purpose - one i forgot to pick and it's now good seed cucumber. The other is a first good size bi-color tomato!
And of course I picked more tomatoes but they haven't been weighted in yet - only cherries were recorded so far. I've been picking them "at first blush" because of the squirrels and voles as they seem to prefer just perfectly ripe ones.
So who will take a stab at what varieties are in here??

  1. Goodness, Jenny, your harvests are getting HUGE! Mine are getting smaller. My larger tomatoes are so slow to ripen, and my squash and zucchini are taking some time off.

    1. thank you, I love such large harvests! my cucumbers are at the end but I've planted 6 other plants in early july and they're just starting to bloom so I hope to have more in couple of weeks. And squash is definitely going strong! But don't worry, you're still over 100 lbs ahead of me :)

  2. Good harvest. Sauce looks wonderful. I use heirloom paste tomatoes to make my sauce and they have a great flavor. I too pick my tomatoes early because of the chipmunks. They just love the bottoms of them

    1. Thank you, all my tomatoes are heirloom and for sauce varieties I have Roma, San Marzano, Super Italian Paste, NJ Giant and Genovese. And yes, i've had more than enough damaged bottoms of the nearly ripe tomatoes!

  3. Oh my gosh... your tomatoes are simply georgous. What a lovely variety. I couldn't begin to name them, but I know they're heirloom!

  4. The birds have been after our tomatoes. They seem to favor red ones, so the Cherokee Purple and Eva Purple Balls have been spared.

It looks like I see Green Zebra in there, and maybe Black Zebra too. Anything else would be a guess on my part, but you have a lovely selection there!

    1. So far birds have not been an issue other than Blue Jays going for blueberries. And yes, there's green zebra and black striped tomatoes in there. There's also pineapple, mortgage lifter, San Marzano, Plum, Jersey Giant, Cherokee Purple, Black Prince, Indigo Rose (not impressed with it at all!), Rutger (the only red round tomato), and the ones that are yellow were supposed to be Subarctic but I think there was a mix in seed as that variety supposed to be red and not lemon-yellow. :)

    2. I'm not impressed with the Indigo Rose so far either! The ones I tried have very little flavor.

    3. You're right about no flavor to them - i'm very disapointed by that. I was hoping it would have taste like one of the large black/purple varieties but it's so bland that I'm not even bothering with picking.

    1. Well technically it's only me and my hubby at home. But then there is his family, my coworkers, my friends etc who all want tomatoes :)

  7. You are going to need a new food scale with all the harvests you are getting. You are going to wear that bad boy out! :)

    Awesome tomato harvest.

    1. it's funny because I just had to replace battery on the scale so I can measure everything again. I do wish I had one with bigger base to hold larger produce. :)

  8. Jenny that is a beautiful harvest! I'm not good with heirlooms, growing or identifying them. I've been doing some research for next year though.

    1. Lisa - some of these I won't be growing again and will do a review of them later in a fall.

  9. Beautiful beautiful tomatoes! I'm not even going to try to guess the varieties. I plant many myself and often don't even know which is which in my own harvest! I just know they all taste great! Your canned sauce looks wonderful too!

    1. It's hard to guess some of them but some I know that I did not like actually on taste so won't be planting them again.
