Another harvest and busy time at the house.. First picture shows group shot, then individual weights for each item or variety. Starting with Zucchini, Butternut Squash, Acorn Squash, carrots, cucumbers, eggplant and some tomatoes - plum and Indigo Rose grouped together (these will be shown with other tomatoes later on).

    1. Harvesting is coming to the end now. There are few more butternut squashes on the vine still ripening so will be picking them probably in september. They can last a long time in winter and make really great side dish when roasted or a soup.

  3. How are you so successful with your tomatoes????? squirrels and blight got most of ours. Beautiful harvest!

    1. I just got hit with late blight so will post about it later in a week. It's sheer number of plants that gives me that harvest. For squirels we use decoys and water repelant - they are motion sensitive.

    2. I put a pinwheel up, but we netted them last year which really helped. Just didn't get around to it this year and then the blight hit. How many plants???? I only have room for 7 inside the garden. Two larger ones outside (which i eventually netted and one of my dogs actually got into....grrrr) and a few cherries in pots outside. I think we would need 40 to get an actual decent harvest with all our issues! do you have one of those motion detector sprinklers then? Decoys?
      Thanks! Amber

    3. I planted over 70 plants originally and only 48 remain and producing. yes, we have a motion detector sprays installed in 4 locations on each side of the garden to keep criters away. we also have an owl and a hock that have solar batteris on their heads which powers them to move and rotate from time to time keeping squirels away (they're afraid of them)

    4. I want an owl and a hawk that have solar batteries so they move. That sounds kind of humorous.

I love your harvests. I have never harvested that much. I don't have room for 70 tomato plants, even if I wanted to plant that many. Congratulations on your great harvests.

    1. only 48 have any tomatoes on them. And we've definitely peaked on the harvest side so from now on harvest will go down considerably.

    1. I dehydrated cherry tomatoes and will store them for winter, but all reds, orange and yellow large were given away to the food pantry. I kept all darks as I like their taste better and they'll be turned into more salsa tonight.

  9. Your butternuts look absolutely perfect! And your tomatoes?! Holy cow!!!

  10. Well the big highlights of your weekly harvests to me are the butternuts and those tomatoes. Both items that are not producing for me at the moment, and much desired! I do have some butternut growing but sadly they are being overrun by the more aggressive Red Kuri squash (which is busy taking over the world at the moment!). The tomatoes had a prolonged period of blossom drop in July because we had continuously cool weather that made fruit set not possible. They are producing now but that really set us way back and it is now a race to get ripe tomatoes before the fall rains take all the plants down with fungus and disease. So... that is why I look at your harvest pics of butternuts and tomatoes and am totally in awe and not without a little envy. :D

    1. All my squashes got attacked by a bug as well and I lost most of them. I only have couple of zucchini, one yellow squash and remaining butternuts that are still green. Not sure how long they'll be there as bugs are really bad this year. Tomatoes are pretty much done - most of them have caught some kind of a disease and dying rapidly. I only have about a dozen plants that are not affected as much but not sure how long that will last. I'll probably rip most of them out this weekend and plant more fall seeds.

  12. Now that's what I call the a good tomato harvest. And I approve of your selection of tomato varieties. I, too, prefer the taste of the black tomatoes. Do you use the sprinklers for squirrels? We had friends in Maine who had a sprinkler to ward off the deer. We know it works because we were attacked while innocently walking down the driveway to the house and got soaked.

    1. yes we use motion activated sprinklers that surrounds the garden. It works for most of the critters, just couple of very old deers that tend to ignore anything including humans.
