Harvest July 21st

Another week another set of harvests. This is cumulative set during the week, still heavy on zucchini, cucumbers, tomatoes picking up more and more, especially cherry type but the large ones are also coming in. Picked few onions for meals and couple of small banana peppers.
Potatoes this year are also a bust - all these are from 8x4 bed. I was expecting 5 times this much and instead I got only a small basketful. There is still a bed of white potatoes and a side of the garden with Yukon's, but at this point I don't have whole lot of hope for either.

  1. Sorry about your potatoes, but you do have a serious amount of squash and cucumbers there. Still waiting for mine, late start this year with the weather.

    1. Dave,
I really wish I could exchange all this squash for potatoes instead - we eat potatoes all the time, but my husband doesn't like squash so most of it being given away. I normally don't get this much out of plants! if I knew i'd get so much I'd plant only 1 instead.

  2. Have you gotten more potatoes in the past? Be Because that doesn't seem too shabby of a yield to me from an 8x4 bed.

Lots of variety in your harvest!

    1. Oh definitely a lot more in the past! Last year it was L shaped bed in large garden and 8 foot bed in small and we had over 95 lbs of potatoes picked. I haven't touched main bed in large garden yet and been slowly picking side planting and small garden - and this is very disappointing.

  3. Well, the potatoes you did get do look beautiful. I enjoy the colors. I had mine in a 4X12 bed, I plan to pile the dirt up higher next year for a bit better yield, but so far they are doing alright. I am sure their won't be any for winter though.

    1. I also doubt that I'll have enough for winter as we use potatoes weekly. Next year definitely changing gameplan and using more compost and planting deeper to get better yield.

  4. Sorry the potatoes were not very productive for you. I think my bed will be a decent producer this year... based on the two I grubbed out yesterday from close to the surface. I did not have such a good producing bed last year though and was disappointed with the production. Looks like your tomato patch is ramping up and going to give you a big bounty though.

    1. I hope your potatoes do better than mine this year. I will have enough tomatoes for eating, even with BER that's currently attacking plants - I have 60 plants so will have enough to eat.

  5. Great harvest. We're about to dig up our red potatoes soon.. wish me luck! It's always a surprise, some years they do great, some years they do lackluster. Either way, happy with anything I can get! Enjoy all your goodies!

  6. Another great looking week, I hope we have your level of variety soon. Right now all we are getting is zucchini!! Bummer that your potatoes didn't work out. We had the same problem last year. We were expecting 100 + pounds and ended up with like 25. :(

    1. Thanks, I still hope something will be picked from large garden but seeing how plants are pretty much dead now I really doubt it. Hope yours will be in better shape and you'll get some variety soon.

  7. You are getting a great harvest and nice variety. Hope your later potatoes will surprise you and produce more. I don't think it is the best year for my garden so I can enjoy pictures of yours and others! Nancy

  9. That does look like a LOT of cucumbers. And compared to my tomato harvests (zero so far) you've got gold!

    1. Thanks, I'm taking whatever I can get out of the garden, but really wish it was more balanced like last year.

  10. My potatoes did horrible this year. I'm not sure if it was all the rain we got that was the problem or the potato beetles that decimated them.. or both! Your bowls of tomatoes look lovely and definitely no shortage of cucumbers for you!

    1. I think it's too much rain when they were supposed to be blooming and too hot right after with bugs on top.

  12. Tricky thing with potatoes. You never know what is going on under the soil until you dig them up. Sorry yours didn't yield as many as you hoped. Although the ones you did harvest look wonderful! It looks like the rest of your garden is producing very well.

    1. thank you, I know it's all up to Mother Nature but this year she's been particularly finicky!

  13. That is too bad about the potatoes. Rachel is sooo right, you never know what's going on with them (or carrots for that matter) until you start digging them up.
