Harvest July 14

Another week of harvests, though very hard to be outside in this ridiculous heat and almost no work is being done other than watering and picking. Out of the tremendous amount of beans I've planted only few survived the bunny-buffet day - just enough to eat but no where near the need for winter. On the good side we're on the cucumber overload and tomatoes starting to come in more steadily. I did pick one huge cabbage that survived animal attacks and it will be used in slaw - it was over 3 lbs! in the meanwhile there is plenty of variety of veggies to keep dinner interesting.
Join others for Harvest Monday over at Daphne's Dandelions and see how other gardens are doing :)

    1. There is definite overload of cucumbers at the moment. But I guess it's a good problem to have.

  2. I've mostly given up on 'putting away' veggies as my garden isn't large enough to support bith putting away and keeping us supplied with fresh. It's worked out much better to jsut eat with the seasons for us. Better for my head I think, too. Then a disappointing crop isn't so hard to take. LOL. Nice harvests this week!

    1. Our garden is pretty large and if it wasn't for animals this year we'd have enough for winter. I still should have potatoes, onions, garlic and tomatoes for winter. Last year we were able to save plenty of beans, peas and other veggies for winter to have yummy dinners. This year I've resolved to having something fresh at the time, but it's race to who gets it first - bunnnies, groundhogs, deer, squirels, moles, chipmonks or birds. It's been VERY odd year in the garden so far.

  3. Wow that's a big cabbage! Sorry the bunnies think you planted all those delicious veggies for them. Hopefully they will share some of your veggies with you! It seems that every year something goes wrong in the garden whether it is critters, weather, diseases, etc.- never a dull year gardening!

    1. Thanks, bunnies are a good lesson to me to stop day-dreaming and counting harvest before it's been picked :)

  6. I think the heat and humidity is getting to us all! Sorry the bunny only left you a few beans but all I have are blossoms so far! No cukes either, just blossoms. Lucky you to have them and tomatoes. Your cabbage may only be one but it is huge! Nancy

    1. I don't know what's going on with snap peas - they're blooming again! it's a small patch that survived and they just keep on blooming!

  8. Don't those bunnies just drive you crazy! I had some bunny problems this year too. They ate all my broccoli. You are getting some nice pickling cucumbers. Mine have stopped producing for some reason. They aren't dead, and all the other cucumbers are producing but not the picklers :(
    Good looking harvest!

    1. I usually like animals, and bunnies are tiny and cute, but you'd never guess by the amount of damage that it came from tiny baby like that! they literally munch down to nothing all brassicas!

For your cucumbers, make sure they have enough water to grow - they stop producing if they don't have enough water.

  9. I would love even just a few of those cukes! Ours are really struggling with all our dry heat this summer...hopefully the rain today helped a bit ;-) Great haul!

  10. I'm with you on the heat! I work a bit in morning and early evening but it's too hot to do much. It's too bad about the rabbits and your beans. They do seem to be a favorite crop for them!

    1. I used to like heat but combined with humidity it's impossible to do anything outside. Sad really, as summer is my favorite time of the year. And yes, bunnies love beans - really love them. munching down to the ground.
