End of June harvest

This week has been a mix of good and bad - good that I was able to get really good variety of veggies, and bad that some things like strawberries and peas came to an end of the harvest. Pulled a volunteer potato that was blocking my melon patch and had enough for a nice meal with  head of broccoli (wish those were growing better).
I picked half of the garlic from the small garden - about 30 or so bulbs. Some started to split from too much water and some rotted on roots, but majority could have used a bit  more time. And I was very happy with the size overall.
So far I've cleaned only about 19 heads and the rest still waiting outside drying on the chair.
And I've picked first cherry tomato! Not very big and could have used another day to get sweeter but it was a treat to have first tomato of the season!
Then I pulled few Yukon Gold and one blue bush from the small garden - I need that space for my carrots. Blue potatoes were disappointing, but yukons are very good in harvest so far.
another new item - rutabaga! It's a bit small and I only picked 2 to try for taste but it's also first time I tried growing it at all so not too bad of an experiment.
and of course tons of lettuces and kale - many were yanked out because they're started to bolt. will have to plant something else instead.

  1. Garlic is the one thing that I've never grown that I really want to! Any tips?

We got our first cherry tomato a few days ago, and yesterday about 10. Very exciting!! The beginning of tomato season!

    1. Garlic is VERY easy to grow! It needs good soil with lots of compost (garlic is a heavy feeder), choose large cloves to plant and plant 2 inch deep 6 inch apart at least for root development at the end of October, add mulch to keep weeds and watch it grow! In june pick out scapes (flower stalk), wait till first week of July and pick!

  3. I need to pull my garlic this coming week too but before I do that I need to clear out the remaining garlic from LAST year in my pantry! LOL! I obviously grow too much of it. Your garlic harvest looks excellent. You may have mentioned (and I missed it) but what is the variety you are growing?

    1. I'm growing several varieties - german porcelain, spanish roja and elephant are mainly used. I think I will plant a bit more in fall as many of my coworkers are asking for some!

  4. You had a great harvest week! The garlic looks great! I haven't picked mine, but soon! Just in time, cause I just ran out of last summers supply! I have some volunteer potatoes in a few places. Sometimes I love a volunteer, but then sometimes I hate where it ends up and needs to be removed to make room for this years stuff! I got enough for a meal from one volunteer potato a few weeks ago! But the peppers needed room so I couldn't let it go!

  5. Your lettuce looks delicious. I have only a few lettuce plants left as the heat was making them bolt.

  7. Hi Jenny-- My first time here, from Daphne's. Looks like you're having a great year...we had such a late planting due to so much rain that everything is late. But we're hanging in there and eating lots of lettuces and kale and radishes and spinach and chard, other things are flowering.

    1. I'm glad you stoped by and welcom to my blog! It's been a very wet, cold and odd year for sure here too. My harvest totals are much smaller than last year and I still hope that the rest of the year will improve. Hope you'll visit again!

    1. It was much smaller last year so this spring I added a lot of compost around the young shoots and it really took off!

  11. Hi Jenny, Nice harvest! Great you have potatoes and a cherry tomato! It is sad to see the end of things and I wish our strawberries would have lasted longer but I am ready to be done with peas. Had my fill till later! What will you plant in place of your lettuce and kale. Sure keeps one busy planning ahead, doesn't it! Nancy
