First harvest for 2013

Well 2013 is here and that means planning for the season is here also. Today I went through my seed inventory and made a list of what I need to add. This year will be slightly different than last - we'll focus on planting as many things that my hubby really likes to eat like tomatoes, potatoes, beans, peas, carrots (a LOT more!) and such to keep it producing for our dinner table instead of trying too many new varieties. I will have less greens like kale because he doesn't like them, but will add more spinach. We will also install drip-system to keep things watered properly - my winter garden was suffering this year because we didn't have it in place and I wasn't around to keep it really going as it should have been. But at any rate it still produces as you can see from picked carrots and couple of radishes for our meal tonight. And our hydroponics are still going strong - giving me greens for stirfry.
So let's hope this year is going to be very productive and nature will cooperate.

    1. Thank you, i was hoping for heaving harvests but this winter came in too fast and too cold and really slowed down the growth even in the green house.

  4. Well, those carrots and greens look marvelous! I am lucky my husband will eat just about any vegetable because I like to try everything at least once. But you are right, it's a waste of time growing things you won't eat.

    1. oh he'll eat greens but he's not a fan of them so why cook something he won't enjoy.

  5. I really didn't know how much I loved kale until I grew it.

    But you're right. Why grow food you don't love?

    1. I love kale too and will plant some for my own use, but not as much as we did this year.

  6. Good planning on your part. It is important to grow what you actually eat. Interestingly enough, I have found that my husband has become quite a kale appreciater, and he started out rather non-keen on greens in general. Not sure what made him switch over but he is there now. All the same, I grow lots of the others items I know he likes as well as the things I do (sometimes they are the same!).

    1. I will have plenty of greens like bokchoy and spinach that he likes to eat and will have some greens like sorel and kale that I like - just not as much as i did last year.

  7. Your system of only growing what the family likes to eat sounds very sensible. Personally though I find it difficult to resist the enticement of the new and untested and put in far too many unproven varieties and vegetables every year.

    1. Oh I'm still going to try many new varieties - of the things that he likes to eat like new type of carrots and green beans and new tomatoes.
